Overview
MET Healthcare were appointed as Principal Contractor to convert an existing general theatre into a new orthopaedic theatre at Whiston Hospital. The project included the installation of an Ultra-Clean Ventilation (UCV) canopy and full mechanical and electrical upgrades, all delivered within a live acute hospital environment.
Working collaboratively with VINCI and the Trust, MET completed the project on an accelerated 12-week programme, maintaining full operation of adjacent theatres throughout. The new orthopaedic theatre achieved validated UCV performance exceeding HTM 03-01 standards.
Scope of Works
Turnkey conversion of an existing general theatre into a fully compliant orthopaedic operating theatre, delivered under a two-stage JCT Design & Build contract.
Scope included:
- Full demolition and strip-out of the existing theatre, including redundant services and finishes, completed under strict infection control measures
- Structural alterations and formation of new openings to accommodate UCV canopy supports and fire compartmentation upgrades
- Installation of a new UCV laminar flow canopy system validated to HTM 03-01 standards
- Complete mechanical and electrical installations, including HVAC plant, ductwork, medical gases, IPS/UPS systems, BMS integration, lighting, nurse call, and fire alarm systems
- Installation of specialist theatre equipment including pendants, surgical lighting, Theatre Control Panels (TCPs), PACS panels, and laser lock-down systems
- Application of MET Healthcare’s High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) walling and ceiling systems, providing hygienic, seamless, and durable clinical finishes
- Comprehensive commissioning, testing, and validation of all systems including ventilation, electrical, and radiation shielding in line with HTM and HBN standards
- Phased and carefully sequenced programme ensuring continuous operation of adjacent live theatres throughout the works
